FUNCTIONAL ARRANGEMENT
Dormitories, workshops and spaces for community
The main scenario of an ordinary inhabitant entering the building, begins with a perspective of the opposite side of the city, through glass walls of ground floor. He can have a walk in a vertical gallery, organised in a wide, open, curled staircase. On his way to his private room, is always accompanied with wonderful Old Town panorama. He enters his well insolated, comfortable room, takes tools and goes to a workshop to work on new creations, meets his friends in a cinema or has a lunch at canteen. In fact, the building is shared into three elements: the common part, students dormitories and separated flats for guest professors and student families.
DORMITORY OF ACADEMY OF ARTS
/ Podwale Przedmiejskie 2b, Gdańsk /
DIPLOMA OF ENGINEERING PROJECT
Gdańsk’s Academy of Arts has its recently renovated buildings scattered around the centre of the Oldtown. The place at Podwale Przedmiejskie street would be ideal for students of fine arts, due to proximity to all
of them. It is set over a wide artery connecting outskirts with the midtown, thanks to which it is well communicated with the rest of the city. The Lower City is a mixture of old tenement houses with lower
class inhabitants and authority offices occupying historic edifices.
THE CONCEPT
Open to the heart of historical Gdańsk
The site itself brings numerous interesting possibilities. It gives a spectacular view on the most of red brick, gothic and renaissance historical buildings among picturesque rows of tenement houses, reconstructed after the II World War. Most of the important dominants however, are set to the north of the location.
The precious view was to be shared between all the habitants of the dormitory. For these reasons,
the northern elevation was fully covered with a skin of glass. I used a special glass with a possibility
of printing shapes and projecting images, that could be seen from the outside. The other parts, exposed
to narrow and less exceptional views, are mostly opaque, obviously not forgetting about sufficient insolation.
